The current social, economic and political climate in South Africa requires a return to social movement unionism. The protracted and PR disaster of the 2010 teachers, nurses and municipal workers strikes nearly pitted workers against the rest of South Africa. Just us COSATU and its affiliates managed to undermine the discriminatory laws of apartheid through changing the work place, there needs to be consideration on how to counter the socio-economic challenges that face workers outside of the immediate job/workplace.
The People’s Budget Coalition (PBC) is a civil society coalition comprising the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the South African Council of Churches (SACC) and the South African Non-Governmental Organisation Coalition (SANGOCO). This coalition has for the past ten years tabled proposals on the budget and a participatory budget process.
The National Labour & Economic Development Institute (NALEDI) is a non-profit organisation which undertakes labour and economic research.
