Sixty-three percent of child deaths in South African hospitals could be avoided, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) heard on Thursday. "Thirty-one percent of those children died during their first 24 hours in hospital," Dr Mphele Mulaudzi told a commission hearing in Johannesburg.

Arthur Manning, the newly appointed chief executive of the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital, is not someone who minces words. Manning said the public has a negative perception of Baragwanath, possibly the biggest hospital in the southern hemisphere, but he has a plan to turn things around in the next six months.

GAUTENG hospitals had the least resources allocated per hospital bed despite being burdened by the demand to provide services to patients from neighbouring provinces, says a study into the state of the nation’s public hospitals. The research was being regarded as key in guiding present health policy, particularly the recent decision by national government to give hospital managers greater powers in a bid to improve service delivery.

Transforming Chris Hani Baragwanath into the ‘People's Hospital’

Over the past five years the NALEDI Hospitals Project has been advocating and supporting the implementation of a transformation project at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, the biggest hospital in the southern hemisphere. The transformation project is based on the research conducted by NALEDI into the functioning of the institution, after the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) requested assistance for its ‘People's Hospital’ campaign at the institution. The transformation project is supported by all stakeholders - hospital management, trade unions, the hospital board, and the Gauteng Department of Health.
