In addition to creating alternatives, it argues, key to this success is building coalitions between unions and other social movements.

Employee ownership in the context of globalisation: a developing country perspective Formal sector employment is not the norm in developing countries, and therefore employee ownership strategies have an impact that is limited to the proportion and structure of formal employment in the economy. Nonetheless, employee ownership when it exists can empower shareholder activism, resulting in better corporate governance and information disclosure and these assist social movement organisations (including trade unions and other organisations) to engage companies on a range of issues.

South Africa’s food security crisis SA faces a crisis of rising food prices and food insecurity. The food price index rose 16.7% the year to June 2002 as compared to non-food inflation of 7.2% . Towards an assessment of the Southern Africa labour movement The challenge of globalisation within regional trade unionism is depicted as a process driven by powerful northern regional blocs - one response by southern countries has been to form competing blocs. SADC unions have argued for a solidaristic regionalism, but the pressures for individual countries to prioritise their own direct economic links with the north undermine such regionalism. Trade unions are thus frustrated by the lack of progress with their social agenda within SADC. Mike Murphy - 2001-01-01

Of Hedgehogs and Foxes- Infrastructure Delivery and Employment Creation This paper explores two themes. Firstly, an assessment of the economic impact of infrastructure delivery is made, focusing on income security & employment opportunities. In arguing for a wider set of development objectives to be met through infrastructure delivery, the question of whether the public sector has the capabilities to meet a wider set of outcomes is raised. Public sector transformation, in particular the ownership of state owned assets, is addressed as the second theme.

Worker Rights in a hostile environment: going beyond competitiveness How can meaningful rights be created, enhanced and sustained in a global economy that is increasingly hostile towards social justice? The process of accelerated economic integration across national borders creates more potential for convergence of working conditions and struggles than ever before. But will it be through upward pressure on bad working conditions or downwards - the so-called race to the bottom? What strategies are emerging that can forge the basis for common struggles? Globalising poverty - The gender dimension to Job Losses, Casualisation and Poverty Despite the massive contribution women make around the world, they still fall into the category of the poorest and the most oppressed. Women have borne the brunt of the social costs of the changes in the world economy such as globalisation, increased international competition, structural adjustment and the deregulation of labour legislation. The importance of labour regulations for small business growth and job creation Our study shows small businesses to be much less constrained by labour regulations than by lack of access to finance and other market-related variables. Government may focus on waiving labour regulations to stimulate small business and job creation but we find no evidence that small business owners, and especially black entrepreneurs, will be significantly helped by such policies, or that they will lead to growth and job creation. However, they will definitely hurt black workers.

Overview of current economic and labour market conditions in South Africa The SA economy continues to grow slower than required, with a big decline in formal sector employment. The unemployment rate is a national crisis and the loss of jobs has exacerbated inequality. Informal jobs, which are primarily survivalist with very low incomes, are replacing better paid, more secure jobs. Trade union membership has grown strongly, although membership in the private sector and, particularly manufacturing has been under pressure due to industrial & company restructuring.
